Tenacious

Tenacious is one of only two tall ships designed specifically to enable disabled and non-disabled people to sail side-by-side as equal members of crew. Features that cannot be found on other ships include:

    • Wheelchair lifts throughout the ship
    • Unique ascender systems that allow wheelchair users to go aloft (either assisted or by their own efforts)
    • A speaking compass for those with visual impairments
    • Braille labels on most doors, cabin numbers, etc.
    • Raised wooden strips down the centre of the decks that you can feel with your feet
    • Hearing loops
    • Raised pointer shapes on metal handrails pointing towards the ship’s bow
    • Adjustable furniture for those with mobility difficulties

Launched in 2000, she became the largest wooden tall ship built in the United Kingdom in the last 100 years. She is 65 metres (213.25 feet) long, including bowsprit, and she is rigged as a three-masted barque with two mizzen gaffs. Her deck is 49.8 metres long, her hull is 54 metres long, and she has a beam of 10.6 metres at her widest point.

The height of her main mast from deck to masthead is 37.6m and her Air Draft (waterline to masthead) is 39.77m (130’ 6”) (in summer). Her full height from keel to masthead is 44.35m (145’ 6”).

The coarse yards (the lowest of the five yards on the fore and main masts) are 20.6m across, and 12.7m above the waterline.

Tenacious’s registered gross tonnage is 586, and she displaces about 714 tons (summer draft). Her maiden voyage was on 1 September 2000 from Southampton to Southampton calling at Sark, St Helier and Weymouth.

Tenacious normally sails with a qualified, paid Permanent Crew of nine:
Master, Chief Mate, 2nd Mate, 3rd Mate, Bosun, Chief Engineer, 2nd Engineer, Cook, Medical Purser;
Volunteers including a Cook’s Assistant and several Bosun’s Mates;
and up to 40 paying Voyage Crew divided into 4 watches, each with a Watch Leader.
